With the huge amount of data available to us every day, a well-built and designed report such as dashboard, is one of the best ways to interpret and communicate large quantities of information.

Excel dashboards are popular visual displays of data, mostly comprising of charts and graphs with striking attention seeking components. It also provides insight, analysis and alerts that can help with project management, customer service, retail management, financial forecasting and much more.

This hands-on workshop aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of general business users with basic experience in Excel. Through this problem solving based course, the Course Participants will learn how to synthesize large information into a logical framework, summarize it into a meaningful format, and then display the summary into easy-to-read tables and graphs using Excel.

Furthermore, Course Participants will learn more advanced functions that can be used to perform more complex calculations, such as calculating Turnaround Time (TAT) for ageing report.

Course Participants will also learn how to select and insert appropriate charts to supplement their reports with interactive illustrations and the charts will automatically be updated when entering fresh data.

  • The course is demonstrated using Microsoft Excel 2013 version. Course participants can use either older or later versions of Excel if they prefer during the workshop.

9:00am – Session 1: How to Organize Report Systematically?

This Session introduces the concepts of organizing reports systematically, including how to segregate report parameters, data and calculations into separate worksheets. By using a sample dashboard worksheet, the Course Participants learn how to link information from multiple worksheets and check the precedent and dependent of a specific cell.

10:30am – Coffee Break

10:45am – Session 2: How to Insert Charts in Your Reports?

By using a given set of data, this Session covers the techniques used to summarize the data and present in charts, as well as modifying the appearance of charts. Furthermore, this Session also discusses how to select an appropriate chart, based on types of information to be presented.

12:30pm – Lunch Break

2:00pm – Session 3: How to Perform More Complex Calculations?

This Session covers advanced formulas used to perform more complex calculations, such as looking up specific values from a table, count/sum a selected field based on a given set of conditions and combine numbers/strings from multiple cells. In addition, Course Participants how to set up formulas that will change dynamically when copying across a range of cells.

Such techniques are useful when preparing a report (e.g. ageing reports) with groupings.

9:00am – Session 4: How to Automatically Highlight Critical Information?

This Session introduces other useful techniques in Excel, i.e. Conditional Formatting, which is used to highlight crucial information – such as highlighting cells with values exceeding a particular benchmark (e.g. highlight report cases that exceed target TAT).

Furthermore, Course Participants also learn how to insert Comments in a particular cell, without affecting the calculations.

Chee Beng is the Director, Consultant & Trainer of ACTBuilder Actuarial Solutions and specializes in life insurance and family takaful actuarial assignments. With over 16 years of professional work experience in the Malaysian insurance and takaful industry, he was formally the head of an actuarial valuation team in a multinational insurance company and a local takaful operator. He has extensive hands-on experience on statutory and IFRS reserving, Risk-based Capital (“RBC”), claim analysis for life & medical products, actuarial model development in Prophet and policy administration system implementation.

By establishing ACTBuilder Actuarial Solutions in 2013, Chee Beng started providing technical solutions to local insurance companies and takaful operators on various business issues, including enhancing actuarial data manipulation & statistical reporting processes, developing alternative solutions for post sales illustration exercise, developing calculation modules for account balance computation and providing consultancy advice on business rules to be adopted in the policy administration systems.

As Chee Beng believes technical skills play an important role in the soundness of business processes, he has also shared his technical knowledge & skills in large data handling and systematic process design via conducting technical training (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Visual FoxPro, Prophet) to all sorts of business users in insurance companies & takaful operators – with training syllabuses that are highly customized in accordance to business users context.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis, the capacity of this workshop is 24 participants. We will issue an invoice upon receipt of your registration form and payment shall be due before the workshop. We shall reserve the right to decline entry for registered but unpaid participants. Should the workshop be cancelled for any unforeseen circumstances, we shall endeavor to reschedule the workshop or refund the workshop fees. Registration fee includes participation in the workshop plus all tea breaks, lunches and workshop documents. For cancellation in writing made at least 5 working days before the closing registration date, the workshop fees may be refunded or the entire amount may be used as credit for any future learn@AP events.
